People... Can be really quite amazing!
FISH, Inc. currently has 225 active volunteers, each contributing in their own way—some once a month, others weekly, and a few multiple times each week. This volunteer support allows FISH to serve an impressive number of individuals in need. Over the past summer, the daily average for walk-ins seeking food, clothing, or both was 34.27 people, totaling about 1,041 visits each month. With an average household size of 2.8, that’s approximately 2,917 people receiving essential food and clothing assistance every month.
What’s remarkable is that FISH partially provides for about 18% of Williamsburg’s population. Imagine that: nearly one in five Williamsburg residents depends on this assistance. This serves as a reminder that, while Williamsburg is known for its beautiful neighborhoods, many families are quietly struggling with basic needs.
The people who come through FISH’s doors are typically humble and deeply appreciative of any help offered. The staff’s dedication shows in how they take time to understand each visitor’s needs and ensure they’re met. Each visitor receives a Food Client Preferences sheet to fill out, allowing the food-order-pickers to tailor the bags to their preferences. And they’re served with dignity and kindness, as FISH ensures no one is turned away, providing for urgent needs even when someone comes in without paperwork.
The environment is lighthearted and positive. Volunteers are often smiling, enjoying their time there. It’s not “work” but a joyful, impactful way to spend the day. Witnessing the gratitude on the faces of people who walk away with bags full of groceries makes every moment worthwhile—exactly what it means to come together to make a difference. 👻 😎 👻
